Relocating to Dead Man's Flats

You know that with a name like Dead Man's Flats, it's not going to be a pretty picture of history. There are several explanations for the original name one associates it with a murder that took place in 1904 at a dairy farm situated on the Bow River. But the Calgary Harold wrote in 1954 that it was named only 10 to 12 years ago after a man was found shot in a cabin in the area. It has quite a history with rumors and suspicions circling around the entire area and apparently, the name didn't draw too many tourism's because from 1974 to 1985 the Hamlet was officially called Pigeon Mountain Service Centre but surprisingly changed its name back to Dead Man's Flats in 1985 to encourage tourism. The new name has unofficially been used to designate the Hamlet for several decades and today, this beautiful location is the home to dozens of hiking trails, golf courses, private tours throughout the Canadian Rockies, wildlife, and many other amazing adventures.

Before the Trans Canada Highway was constructed in the 1950s, this area was sparsely populated and there were several cabins, farms, and ranches throughout the area. Proximity to the new national highway created more development as a commercial centre and rest stop for travelers and truck drivers. Businesses opened motels, diners, cafés and markets and there have been several proposed developments including the construction of a new residential neighbourhood and light industrial park.

Close by is the Stewart Creek Golf and Country Club, the pinnacle of Canada's Mountain golf. With unique dining options, golf events, and a beautiful venue for weddings and banquets, this pristine golf course and the base of the mountain offer some of the most spectacular views and golf experiences in the world.

The Banff Gate Mountain Resort located just south of the highway is a base camp for all mountain activities. Nearby adventures at Lake Louise and Banff National Park include water rafting, hiking, skiing, mountain biking, dog sledding, golf and much more. There are beautiful little chalets and resort amenities, cabins, heated pools, hot tubs and family recreation rooms. It is truly been one of the most unique outdoor adventures locations in the world.
